We got the whole thing set up Sunday afternoon and by evening had a pretty good catch - considering it was just a few hours before dark. Monday was better but I thought the flies weren't as active as some days. Today after a rain and hot and humid weather we got quite a few flies. YEAH!!!!! But they are still bothering the cows so we might have to move the whole contraption to a new site that might catch more. (did I use 'might' twice in one sentence - you might think I've become a political reporter) Anyway any dead horse fly is a GOOD horse fly!! Oops! Any dead female horse fly is a good horse fly !! The horse flies are out and BITE. They live a strange life cycle for causing the cows such a problem. The female need a blood meal to have enough protein to lay eggs in wet areas. The eggs hatch and larval and pupal forms live in the soil feeding on debris and other dirt dwellers then fly out a year or two later and wreck havoc with large animals getting blood to start the cycle all over. The cows go nuts and since they seem to only fly around when it is hot and humid the cows will hide out in a dark corner of the barn all day to avoid them.

Last week I stumbled on a trap, 'Googling' horse flies, that is supposed to catch them and immediately ordered it. We are awaiting its arrival and whether to see if it stands up to all the testimonials. It would be different to actually see the cows during the day! Wow to think we could actually kill some of them!!!!Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-9906447260166432312010-07-23T18:52:00.000-07:002010-07-23T18:58:26.695-07:00Facebook?Well, back in April of 2009 I moved to Facebook because everyone said it was a much easier way to post. It probably is, but oddly enough, after switching over I really don't post very much. Maybe a comment now and then and I'll put some pictures up that I want other to see, but really I find myself reading the swarm of short posts from everyone else. And I do like looking at the pictures posted of my friends. It does keep me informed but somehow doesn't seem the same as the blog. Soooooooo maybe I should fire up the old blog or at least post a few complete paragraphs now and then.Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-25442665554073844992009-11-28T19:02:00.001-08:002009-11-28T19:12:53.592-08:00Mixed Up ThanksgivingHere it is - Thanksgiving Break! Glad for the few days off but didn't really have the normal thanksgiving dinner. Since we were planning on a Saturday turkey with Ingird and Jake we passed on going to Jon and Jamie's for their big dinner on the same day. Well, Jon and Jamie said come on down and we will have something on Thursday. I suggested scallops and we did indeed have scallops. Jamie made a autumn salad, linguinie with alfredo sauce, plus lots of other goodies and I fried some scallops. Great time but Kate was wore out by the time we left and wondered if her 'cold' was coming back like it had already a few times. Anyway, pneumonia it was after a chest x-ray on Friday and so the rest of the plans were replaced with lots of bedrest.Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-73971034951429427412009-04-25T18:14:00.001-07:002009-04-25T18:17:02.678-07:00Wow it has been a long time since I posted anything new here. I guess facebook has a way of making one feel connected without actually posting very much. Anyway, green is the correct word since our pastures finally have greened up and Kate mowed the lawn for the first time this spring. We moved the electric fence so that the cows could also mow down part of the lawn next to their pasture.Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-61686763308319450182009-04-25T18:10:00.000-07:002009-04-25T18:13:42.729-07:00Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-61819136764529571872009-01-03T20:15:00.001-08:002009-01-03T20:21:43.687-08:00

Just a couple of more pictures of our exciting holidays! Sunday we had Jackie and Clarence over for dinner before taking Jeannette over to Ralph and Ginny's.
Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-58755031996455636242008-10-19T16:44:00.000-07:002008-10-19T16:57:56.870-07:00

Jon, Jamie, and family came up from Layfayette the first weekend in October and we had out own Apple Days. Our trees are loaded so we put all the kids in the loader and picked some apples. After washing the apples and opening them up and removing any bad parts, we chipped them and then pressed apple juice. We probably ran three runs through the press and got 4 1/2 gallons of juice. Not bad for a few hours of work. Grandma Kate got some pictures and you can see we had lots of help. When we were working outside the bees showed up when we were chipping so soon we had to move inside.
Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-998319319565724762008-09-28T17:21:00.000-07:002008-09-28T17:42:18.190-07:00You know brothers when you see them I had to laugh. I went to Indy monday and got to see Ingrid and Jake. Well, originally I thought that Gunnar had flag football practice and Ingrid had plans for supper so Jake and I would go to football practice and see 'organized chaos.' Anyway that was not the plans at all and aften a nice dinner of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans I left for Fort Wayne. But before going I got a picture of Ingrid and the boys. As you can see Aiden did not want Gunnar in the picture or at least on that side of Mom!!!Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-3434106421225280702008-09-14T20:02:00.000-07:002008-09-22T07:25:43.574-07:00Jude's 6th Birthday<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3OEsNVIoTLGfOWet6y6PBiKLXzmwR-FtfhDvfyRE5r0hyphenhyphenzQ6oVfJhb6cES9E9kf6SGGv09JJ30U4x3Wm_qipohTdOsPZKvzZqrfZnOCTVAQGZRGbHULB9h2gJf3mmCcjIivUi4Ma546QC/s200/104_1282.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246079344108380338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9LQsIv1WV96AXtTzq_dQ5AE6VANhDCTeD6jl5FtFYniHK6fppOwCgiM4KruDgNwV8ZpMxHWhm2ICnjpo0YR7oCwkMM7dssDX1NpmWZ_OqmaeIK-4XMa9jmNO34mwwkQQqrQi6BSOty8kQ/s200/104_1278.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246079117719967586" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFoSo60YTX_hlSKUJzP6fMRdFeguQ3zPohJ61eJenyJyfrccCDIxNifN3l6_ui_F0_mUYk_V8iV6LOMZeGZ-QTGlOpVR6iY8COaE9YeucPnhBvf1BmTFNoiySlqiHgy3h0WfduA55XOFdB/s200/104_1268.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246078792878594210" />
And there is more than calves!! She is our last one so now it is only keeping things in order. (So to speak) Maude has 'lost' her calf several times. We had to help her look and when (we found it and) she finally got her calf back, mainly because he did'nt 'want to get up' and was on the other side of the electric fence, she seemed to think it was our fault. Anyway, Freddie Mac has arrived! After Maggie mae, Sallie mae, Fannie mae, Ellie mae, and Lissy mae, we have a BULL so Freddie mac is here!! Well here they are.
We went to what was called the 'tide pool' and couldn't see much. However, feeding the animals in the tide pool was to occur at 3 so we came back and were the only customers to see the show. She pulled out snails and fed them (scallops), fed anemone's (sp?), and showed us a spider crab before she fed it. Then she pulled out a big crab and showed us it before she fed him scallops also. Jackson always able to ask the hard questions asked how old the crab was and stopped her in her tracks. It was fun to see the crab try to find the food. She had to put it in one of his pinchers before he could really start to chow down (and not get pinched in the process).
Jilian look funny in the mirrors and also had three Grandma's taking her picture!!
When we climbed the stairs to the bicycle ride you could see all of the places we had been. Lots of fun... But nothing was as fun as the 'sewer.' You would go down a man hole and crawl through twisty tunnels that were pitch black and then 'viola' you were out. Jackson is looking in the exit trying to figure out what is taking everyone so long getting out. They went through the sewer so many times it was hard to count (especially when Jude remembered that Kate had a little flashlight in her purse!!).Roger & Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09222612768406869297noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1302362335290457044.post-75647440386173951822008-08-23T15:59:00.000-07:002008-08-23T17:46:07.398-07:00<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig55XuRRC5_8YJtItD6XqKa4DAV5tzKuSysY14AlOw0yAQyKd5BYPvldbTNswqs6PXLyPcowbNkWsVAsqPLauAi35kDvio1UGxRdphgS-_VIQnXje698YbS8zaTaebxDTB5vTblf6fMQLT/s200/lissiemae1a.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237878136281517858" />
Well, we are kind of slow getting this posted, but Mocha had a calf last Tuesday. In keeping with the naming, Kate named her Lissie Mae. We keep hoping for a bull calf so we and use Freddie Mac. Maude is the only cow we are waiting on and if she has a heifer we will have to think long and hard. Mocha is in keeping with her performance last year and was down and unable to get up on Thursday morning (milk fever) so we had to i.v. 1/2 a liter of calcium gluconate before going to work. Her calf was not with her so we had to bring her up and she danced around her mother trying to get her up because she was hungry. She got up in about 2 hours.
